Why did my credit score drop?

Scores move for reasons nobody explains: a new collection, a balance that reported high, a card the lender closed. Ask Solid AI reads your own reports, explains what's going on in plain language, and helps you work out the next step that fits.

Questions, answered

Common questions about building credit

Pay every account on time, keep your card balances low compared with their limits, and check your reports for errors. If you don't have much history yet, you can add on-time payments to your credit reports: with a credit builder account, or by reporting rent and bills you already pay.2 Your Solid Credit plan puts these steps in order for your own reports.

It really depends on your credit profile. For example, having limited credit history is different from not having enough diversity of accounts, or high utilization, or a history of late payments. Each one of those requires a different approach. There's no one formula that works for everyone. That's why we build you a custom plan and help you follow through on it.

Only if it's reported. Bill Reporting can add rent and bills you pay on time to your credit report, including up to 24 months you've already paid. Only on-time payments are reported. How much it matters depends on your whole credit file and on the scoring model a lender uses, so results vary.

Usually late payments, because payment history carries the most weight in the most common scoring models. High card balances, collections and errors on your reports can also pull a score down. Your check-up shows which of these are on your reports.4

In three separate ways that work together. Credit Builder is a line of credit that pays your Solid Credit subscription. You repay it, and your on-time payments are reported to the credit bureaus.2 Bill Reporting can add eligible rent and bills you already pay. And your Credit Action Plan shows what else is affecting your credit and what to do next, with Ask Solid AI to answer questions along the way.

Credit Builder is a line of credit from our bank partner that works like a store card. A store card is used at one store; Credit Builder is used to pay your Solid Credit subscription. Each month you borrow the cost of your subscription from the line and repay it. Those on-time payments are reported to the credit bureaus, along with your credit limit.2 That works on the two biggest factors in your credit score: payment history and utilization.4

No. Applying uses a soft inquiry, which won't affect your credit score. If you're approved, a new account from Upward Financial, our partner, appears on your credit report.

No security deposit, 0% APR, and no annual fees. Credit Builder comes with your Solid Credit subscription, which is required.1

No. You should be skeptical of anyone who does. Credit scores depend on your whole credit file, not any one account. What builds history is on-time payments, month after month, and your plan shows what else is worth working on.
